Edgar Allan Poe And The American Romantic Revolution
Edgar Allan Poe was an American author and poet that was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. Poe was considered to be part of the American Romantic Revolution. Poe could id referred to be more of a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦scientist than an artist,â⬠in his works he has an ââ¬Å"â⬠¦almost chemical analysis of the soul and consciousnessâ⬠(H.D. Lawrence). He is best known for his stories of mystery and death, especially the death of a beautiful young woman. Poe was also credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Critics and biographers speculate that his reoccurring theme of loss and death stemmed from his personal loss of multiple woman throughout his life. Critic Edmund Clarence Stedman speculates that ââ¬Å"as in the case of Poe, a twofold ideal existsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Stedman I). He is suggesting that either Poeââ¬â¢s writings are sincere and he took his experiences and turned them into work, or he is false and has twisted his l ife to make it seem as though his work reflects who he was. Because of Poeââ¬â¢s hardships in life, he struggled to hold down jobs and to keep himself sober. Poeââ¬â¢s adversities in life led to an altered mental state and reality, which can clearly be identified in his works. In his poetry, Poe frequently alludes to death and the afterlife, in addition to his questioning of reality. Also, in many of his poems, Poe either refers to or uses the sea as a setting in the piece.
